Andrew was the grandson of John Fife "The Pioneer" (1721 - 1800) and the second son of parents William Fife (1751 - 1808) and Margaret (1763-1849) who adhered to the Scottish naming protocol. Their eldest son was named after the paternal grandfather, John Fife; the second son was named after the maternal grandfather, Andrew Boyd; the third son was named after father William. Andrew was born in 1790 in what is known today as Upper St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Andrew was eighteen years old when his father, William, died and bequeathed to him property in Elizabeth Township, PA. The other three sons inherited portions of the land on which their parents had lived. Andrew moved to his propetty which he farmed near Elizabeth where his mother, Margaret Boyd Fife, and his his aunt, Martha Boyd Gilfillan, had been born.

Andrew was twice-married. In 1814, he married Sarah Henry Fife who was 24 years old when she died in 1817. They had two children. Andrew married Sarah Robinson in 1819, and they had eleven childen, including Dr. Samuel Robinson Fife whose history follows. Andrew was a soldier in the War of 1812. He was a farmer and was active in the Round Hill Church where he was buried in 1878. His wife died one year later. Their graves, side-by-side, are located directly behind the church where a single marker is engraved "Father" on one side, "Mother" on the other.

Dr. Samuel Robinson Fife
Mar 20. 1832 - Sept 3, 1914
Dr. Samuel Robinson Fife was the earliest physician to have practiced in Elizabeth, a town on the banks of the Monongahela River, located a few miles from Clairton and about 22 miles upstream from Pittsburgh. His practice and home was in West Elizabeth and included patients in much of that portion of the Monongahela Valley. In June 1863, Doctor Fife married Amanda Linn from nearby West Newton, PA. The family story is that "a mandolin married a fife and they made beautiful music together".

Amanda's grandfather, James Linn (1760 - 1838) was born in Ireland and married Elizabeth Young (1764 - 1836) after immigrating to the American colonies. He served three enlistments under George Washington during the years 1776 to 1777. Her father, William Linn (1792 - 1858) was married to Elizabeth Clark (1800 - 1845). He served in the War of 1812. Amanda and Dr. Fife had six children, including George Lee Fife whose history follows.

George Lee Fife was the second of six children born to Amanda and Dr. Samuel Fife. Refer to lineage section. He was graduated from Pittsburgh's Western Pennsylvania Medical College on 3/27/1890. He practiced in Blair and, in 1899, he married Nancy Jane Duff. The couple later moved up the hill to reside in Clairton, PA. Dr. Fife died of influenza at age 39 during an epidemic at which time he was over-worked as a physician caring for the ill.

Nancy Jane Duff Fife was born in Gill Hall, near Clairton, one of 10 children. She was the daughter of Archibald McCleese Duff and Margaret McQuiston Duff. Her father, Arch, enlisted in the Civil War. Captured by the Confederates, he was imprisoned for 11 m onths in Andersonville prison.

Dr. Fife died eight years after their marriange. Nannie, as she was known to all, was faced with caring for three children, all under the age of seven, as well as her 16-year-old sister, Fanny. They had been raising Fanny like a daughter since she was 11-years-old when their mother, Margaret Duff, died in 1902. Following Dr. Fife's death, Fanny Duff (Barrickman), was like an older sister to Nannie's three children: Richard Lee, Samuel Robinson, and Sara Grace.

Nannie's home was large enough to allow her to accept a few boarders at a time when the area's steel industry was expanding and attracting professional men. She later married Harry Lash who was employed in the US Steel operations. They lived in their Shaw Avenue, Clairton home for the rest of their lives. Nannie's grandchildren were Sam Jr., Robert, Sally, & Rae Nancy Fife and Richard Morgan.
